Whales, eagles, waves, drizzle and fog...

On paper, today would certainly qualify as a lousy day for outdoor activities. But we didn't let the forecast rain and fog discourage us this morning, and set out to paddle 21 km from Bauline to Pouch Cove (map). And it was well worth it: after about 15 minutes, we saw the first of many bald eagles, and a little while later we encountered two fin whales not more than 50 m from our boats. After some play time in the waves off Cape St. Francis, we stopped for lunch and headed on into the fog towards Pouch Cove, where we arrived in the mid-afternoon, very pleased with our little adventure. Some video and photos are below.

Washinton, DC

PS: Frohe Ostern!

I was on a business trip to Washington the week before last, so Laura and I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to take a little mini-vacation on the following weekend. We had a nice time relaxing out in the historic Georgetown area, seeing the White House (saw Obama's daughter and dog play on the South lawn), Lincoln Memorial, Congress and other sights... Below are a few pictures. PS: Happy Easter!

Time for a post...

It has been a while since my last entry here, and among other things I have spent a week in Ottawa, bought a new car, and have been busy organizing an important meeting. Until a couple of days ago, it was still pretty wintery here in St. John's, but of course that has not stopped me from paddling and other outdoor activities. One noteworthy outdoor experience was a neat encounter with a curious fox at Torbay Point a couple of weeks ago. As I came out of the woods, the little guy was there feeding on insects, and seemed quite unbothered by my presence. I crouched down ans snuck closer to take a few pictures, and he interestedly came my way. That is, until I stood up an he realized that I was bigger than him ;) Aside from foxes, I also came pretty close to a couple of young seals in Bay Bulls Harbour, and took a stab at using my kayak as an icebreaker in Cape Broyle (doesn't work very well)... So far so good, but please have a look at the pictures and video below, or check out some of the photos on the blogs of my fellow paddlers Clyde and Tony.
