Winter camping

Some time ago, I came across the idea of "microadventures" (see here), doing something you haven't done before, something adventurous, close to home. I had never camped in the winter, so on Friday, I packed up my backpack with my camping gear, and after supper, I put on my headlamp and headed out to Torbay point. I had scouted a couple of potential campsites on aerial images, and had programmed them into my GPS, which came in handy in the dark. The first couple of sites looked decent, but given the forecast -9 °C and gale force wind, I wanted to make sure I was getting the best possible shelter, so I went to check out another spot that had looked good on the map. It turned out to be the best of the potential sites, but upon closer inspection it became clear that the site was already taken - tracks and depressions in the snow left no doubt that this was a moose hangout. I was not in the mood for such company, so I went back to my previous spot, shovelled a level platform in the snow and put up my tent in the moonlight. After some hot tea, I crawled into my sleeping bag, and settled in for a quite comfortable night.
When I woke up the next day around 9 am, I made myself a cup of coffee and had my breakfast looking out over the ocean, taking my time and thoroughly enjoying myself. Later, I packed up, and made my way home, just in time for Norah to wake up from her morning nap and welcome her Papa back home. It had been a great little adventure, and, satisfied with my preparation and gear, I noted that I had never been cold the entire time. A few pictures, including my photo of the week#4, are below.

San Francisco

Last week I was on a business trip to California, and on the way to my meeting at UC Davis, I was able to spend a bit of time exploring San Francisco. Even after many years of air travel, I still find it fascinating to be able to wake up on an island in the North Atlantic and look out onto the Pacific and the Golden Gate Bridge from a viewpoint high above San Francisco Bay the same afternoon. I very much enjoyed the few hours I had to explore this vibrant city, and was particularly impressed with the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Gambo Pond

Last week, we took a little vacation at Laura's Nana's cabin on Gambo Pond, just outside Terra Nova National Park. It's a quiet, beautiful spot with a sandy beach, and 30 kilometeres of lake to explore... We had a really great time relaxing in the sun, playing in the sand, swimming and paddling the kayak and the canoe. Norah had a lot of fun, liked her first trip in a kayak, and we all very much enjoyed our first family vacation just the three of us. A few pictures of our time at Gambo Pond are below.

Land der Berge (land of mountains) is the title of Austria's national anthem, and the Alps are in my soul just like the ocean is in every Newfoundlanders heart. So whenever we go back to Austria, I need to spend some time in the mountains...
Of course on our most recent trip, I also wanted to take Norah on her first proper mountain, so after Johannes and I climbed Schesaplana (see post from May 26th, with story on shoe malfunction), we took Norah to the top of the Portlahorn (2010 m above sea level) on a warm May morning. She slept most of the way up, but seemed to have a blast on the way down, giggling at my mom all most of the way and insisting on carrying one of my hiking poles.
Before the end our time in Austria, we did another smaller mountain with Norah, and I really enjoyed another hike & ski trip in the Arlberg region with my brother Johannes, where we found some fantastic spring snow on steep northerly slopes below the Maroiköpfe peaks (2522 ml asl). A special treat that day was that we went to the beach for a swim in the afternoon after spending the morning skiing more than 2 vertical kilometers higher up...
A few pictures of our time in the mountains are below and in the slideshow here.

Niagara Falls

At the end of June I spent two days in Niagara Falls attending a conference, and of course I took the opportunity to stroll down to the falls themselves. It had been almost exactly 15 years since I had last stood in the same place admiring the water tumbling down the escarpment with my brother Johannes during our first trip through Canada (August/September 1997). Standing there in a contemplative mood, I wondered what the next 15 years will bring... So, here are a few pictures of the impressive views there.

Norah in Österreich / Austria

Between the middle of Mai and the beginning of June, we spent 3 weeks in Austria, where we enjoyed the warm sun, the mountains, the lake and above all the time we were able to spend with family and friends. Among other things, we took a 3 day trip to Innsbruck, rode on the Wälderbähnle, climbed a few mountains (more on the Wälderbähnle and the mountains later in separate posts), celebrated Norah's Austrian baptism, and simple had a great time... A few pictures of Norah's first trip to Austria are below, as well as in the slideshow here.

Schesaplana (2965 m / 9728 ft)

Yesterday, Johannes and I hiked up Schesaplana, the highest mountain in the Rätikon range of the Alps. In anticipation of encountering spring snow, we brought our Figl skiis, which are very short and can be tied onto any reasonably sturdy hiking boot. At 8am we took the first cable car up to Lünersee reservoir and made our way up the sometimes steep slopes. Despite some gear troubles, we made it to the top in just under 3 hours. After a relaxing break, we strapped on our little skies and headed down the snow fields, which was a lot of fun. Unfortunately, my boots completely disintegrated on the walk along the lake, which made the descent to somewhat challenging: when strapped in for skiing, the boots held up alright, but with the soles completely gone, the plastic guts of the boots provided litterally no grip for scrambling down the rocky couloir, so I ended up doing the non-skiable sections in bare feet for better feel and grip - I guess there´s a first for everything... A few pictures of our little adventure are below, with more shots in the slideshow here.
