Camping in Placentia Bay

A few weeks ago, a few of us toured Placentia Bay with our kayaks and tent for a couple of days. This trip on a weekend in August, which took us 55 km along the Burin Peninsula and various islands, reminded me once again why I enjoy this way of travelling so much. There is something very special about setting off with tent and kayak with nothing but the trip as a destination, finding a beautiful spot to camp for the night, sitting by a  campfire under the stars, cooking freshly gathered mussels, and crawling into a warm sleeping bag after a day in the fresh air. Along the way we saw numerous bald eagles, a couple of caribou, and a few otters, which awaited us on Bar Haven Island after crossing the bay in the morning fog with a compass bearing. Needless to say I had a fantastic trip, which was followed by an equally nice trip to the Bonavista peninsula with Laura over a long weekend a few days later. But more about that in my next post. For now, please have a look at few photos and a map with our route. Also take a look at Dean's blog entry about this trip.
