Transatlantic cable

***
A couple of weeks ago, I was down at Middle Cove beach and noticed that a recent storm had washed out what looked like an old pipe at first glance. At closer inspection, it appeared to be a steel cable. I was intrigued, because I remembered noticing an abandoned submarine cable marked on marine charts of this area. Upon further research, I came across an article which described that in 1953, a transatlantic submarine cable was laid from Lands End, England to Middle Cove, and then from here to Nova Scotia.
So my guess is that I found either the old cable to England, or the one to Nova Scotia. Either way, I thought it was kind of neat...

First snow on Signal Hill

After six months, my Papa time with Norah has unfortunately come to an end, and I have been back at work since the end of October. In this transition period, I have not been able to take many pictures or post anything to this blog - I will try to catch up with the missing pictures of the week, but in the meantime, here is my latest Photo of the week: a 360° panorama from Signal Hill, taken with my new tablet.

Canada 2003

...
I first visited Newfoundland in September 2003 - just after I met Laura while she was in Innsbruck - when my brother, my friend Ebi and I arrived in St. John's for a trip across Atlantic and Eastern Canada. From here, we made our way through Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario and returned home to Austria from Toronto a month later.  It was a memorable trip and for Johannes and myself, it also marked the completion of our Canadian coast to coast crossing, that we had begun when we travelled from Vancouver to Toronto in 1997 by rental car and Greyhound. I enjoyed looking through my notes and slides from back then. Below are a few highlights, including my selection for Picture of the week#39. Enjoy...

Snorkeling at Middle Cove Beach

I had done a lot of snorkeling in my childhood and youth in the Mediterranean, so I was naturally interested to look beneath the surface here. I did give it a try brief try a few years ago, but even in the summer, the water was just too cold to float around for more than 5 or 10 minutes. But I never quite gave up on the idea, so last weekend, I gave it another shot, this time wearing my paddling drysuit. It was fantastic - I was comfortable and warm, and I really enjoyed exploring a completely different world. My snorkel and google will definitely come along in my kayak from now on! Below are a few pictures.

Boreal forest

A little over a week ago, I went to Salmonier Nature Park for the first time. I think we both enjoyed spotting moose, caribou, otters and many other animals, which live in generous enclosures along a boardwalk through beautiful boreal forest and marshes. Below is a shot I took along the way.

Avalon Coastline

The eastern Avalon shoreline with its spectacular cliffs and headlands, sheltered coves and occasional picturesque beaches is a pleasure to explore both on land and on water. Below is the scenery of the section between Torbay Point and Logy Bay on a misty day in the first week of September.

Camping in Terra Nova

On Labour Day Weekend, we took Norah camping for the first time, and I think she had a blast. She seems to be the happiest when she is out in the fresh air (not quite unlike her Papa), and was not bothered at all even by the pouring rain on the second day, happily wandering around in her little full body rainsuit. There is no bad weather, just bad clothes (gear), right? So, we had a fantastic time together, and taking our daughter camping for the first time certainly felt like a fitting way to mark my tenth anniversary of first setting foot on this island... A few pictures are below.

Triathlon

This spring, my buddy Paul and I signed up or the St. John's Triathlon (sprint distance: 750 m swim, 23 km bike ride and 5 km run), and successfully completed the race on August 4th (my first ever competitive sports event, results here). And because we has so much fun despite the pouring rain and felt in pretty good shape, we decided to participate in the next race in Paradise a few weeks later aswell (results here, note: slightly longer course). I am taking the liberty to repost below some pictures of the races taken by others (St. John's race, Paradise race), aswell as the two finisher photos by Melissa, which I have chosen as the respective picture of the week. Looking forward to next years races!
