In the last while, I went out to Cape Spear in the evening a few times to look out for whales. It seems to be a good spot there - I could see the spouts of the massive mammals in the bay as soon as I cam over the crest of the Hill by Blackhead each of the times. A very special experience was a calm evening a little over a week ago, when there was at least 20 humpbacks in the waters around the Cape. The spouts from their blowholes shining in the evening light and loud breathing audible all around. Pretty cool thing for quick drive after work (photos)...
I've also been exploring the trails in area around here a bit. Last weekend I took my mountain bike on the T'Railway (that's the abandoned railbed, which now forms part of the Trans Canada Trail) and went all the way out to Laura's parents cabin on Nine Island Pond (map), where I arrived after 6 hrs and 80 km gravel - tired, with two broken spokes, and very happy to go for a swim. The next day, I didn't feel like moving all that much and took the ATV for a spin around the pond (video here). Overall, I have to say, the explorer in me is really enjoyed discovering the countryside by bike, on foot, ATV or snowshoes in the winter... I may have to add 'on water' to that - I'll see if the whales are still around this weekend and might try ocean kayaking...
