Humpback whale play / Buckelwal-Spiel

One beautiful evening last week, Laura and I took Norah down to Middle Cove beach and strolled along the East Coast Trail towards Torbay. Not too far from shore there were a few humpback whales feeding on capelin, and one of them was putting on a show by busily slapping its flippers on the water (see video below); I had never been able to observe this behaviour from up close before. It is not known for sure why the whales do this, but it is thought to be help keep the fish together for easier sieving by the whales.
