[English below] Nach drei schönen Wochen in Österreich sind wir seit letzten Sonntag wieder zurück in Neufundland.
After three beautiful weeks in Austria we have been back in Newfoundland for about a week now. There is still lots to report about our trip to Austria, and I will do so in the next couple of posts. But meanwhile a brief entry about an impressive paddling trip right at our doorstep, launching 10 minutes from here down at Middle Cove beach. My fellow paddler Tony had asked a couple of days ago if there was any interest in paddling to the iceberg that had been grounded between Middle Cove and Outer Cove for some time. Of course I was interested, but as I drove down along Marine Drive yesterday morning, there was no iceberg to be seen anywhere. Instead, there was something else - breaching whales! Excited, we got our boats ready and paddled towards the characteristic spouts and before long, we were in the middle of a pod of humpbacks. Several times, one of the magnificent animals surfaced within a couple of boat lengths from me, and at one point, I could even see the flippers of a humpback shining in the blue water directly under me. What a treat to be this close! Below are couple of pictures, though needless to say, they don't fully do the experience justice...
