Most of the snow has melted over the past week here in Newfoundland, and there ware a few signs of spring with a some warming sunshine over the weekend (at least when out of the wind) and the first crocuses blooming in front of our house.

Wild morning at Middle Cove beach

Frohe Ostern an Euch alle!

For Good Friday, a wave and storm surge warning had been issued for the east coast of Newfoundland. So on Friday morning, I went down to Middle Cove beach to take a few pictures. There were a number of other people there, and the scene was impressive. The waves were enormous, with the beach completely awash and the surf zone reaching all the way up to the parking lot. A few photos, including photo of the week #13, as well as a video are below. Also check out my previous post about yesterday's storm paddle. Happy Easter to everyone!

Ottawa

Last week, I was in Gatineau near Ottawa for a meeting I organized, so I did not have much time to take photos. But I did manage to get a quick shot of Ottawa's skyline at night...

Eagle flyby

Last Saturday, we took Norah to Signal Hill for a walk and let our kite fly in the wind above Cabot Tower. Norah was very interested, but she was not the only one - an obviously curious bald eagle showed up and circled above us to check out the kite. A picture of the eagle flying by the kite is is below.

Roaring river

[English below] Am 4.
---
On March 4th, almost 70 mm of rain fell  within a few hours, melting lots of snow and turning little Virginia River a few minutes from our house into roaring white water. So after supper, I grabbed our camera, tripod and a flashlight to get my picture of the week. In the 6 second exposure below (ISO 200, f/3.5) I lit up the raging water with my headlamp, and relied on the ambient city light to complement the scene.

Flying Duck

---
I was down in Quidi Vidi on Sunday to see if the foggy scene would make for a good picture of the week, but then this duck came flying by - so I just pressed the shutter, and kind of liked the result...

Winter wonderland

Viel Spass!

On Friday, we had a fair bit of fresh snow, and we really enjoyed the weekend outside with a snowshoeing trip along the coast, and a couple of fun excursions with Norah in her little red sled. So below is this weeks picture of the week of ice covered trees and bushes shining in the sun. A few additional photos are below. Enjoy!

Last weekend I finally went for my first kayaking trip of the year. It was a bright sunny Saturday morning when six of us paddled out of Tors Cove under blue skies past snowy islands towards the abandoned fishing community of La Manche (old photos here). We all enjoyed the sun, the wind and the salt water, and after a pleasant lunch stop on the flat rocks at La Manche, we made our way back towards Tors Cove. But not before stopping for some fun at Bauline East, where a couple hundred meters off the coast there is a submerged rock, which makes for some excellent surfing in breaking waves when the conditions are right ;) A few pictures, including the photo of the week #7, are below, and a number photos and takes on the day can be found on the blogs of Dean, Sean andTony (parts 1, 2).

The Penny

This week's photo of the week is of the Canadian penny, which has been taken out of circulation as of Monday this week. Too bad in a way, I kind of always liked the penny, and sometimes brought some back to people in Austria. Runner up to the photo of the week is a shot of Church Cove along the East Coast Trail south of Flatrock, where I took a nice stroll in the snow last Sunday.

---
For the current photo of the week, I chose a scene from downtown St. John's - colorful houses in fresh snow (note: the picture had been planned as photo of the week #4, but then I ended up winter camping, so I moved it to week #5).

Winter camping

Some time ago, I came across the idea of "microadventures" (see here), doing something you haven't done before, something adventurous, close to home. I had never camped in the winter, so on Friday, I packed up my backpack with my camping gear, and after supper, I put on my headlamp and headed out to Torbay point. I had scouted a couple of potential campsites on aerial images, and had programmed them into my GPS, which came in handy in the dark. The first couple of sites looked decent, but given the forecast -9 °C and gale force wind, I wanted to make sure I was getting the best possible shelter, so I went to check out another spot that had looked good on the map. It turned out to be the best of the potential sites, but upon closer inspection it became clear that the site was already taken - tracks and depressions in the snow left no doubt that this was a moose hangout. I was not in the mood for such company, so I went back to my previous spot, shovelled a level platform in the snow and put up my tent in the moonlight. After some hot tea, I crawled into my sleeping bag, and settled in for a quite comfortable night.
When I woke up the next day around 9 am, I made myself a cup of coffee and had my breakfast looking out over the ocean, taking my time and thoroughly enjoying myself. Later, I packed up, and made my way home, just in time for Norah to wake up from her morning nap and welcome her Papa back home. It had been a great little adventure, and, satisfied with my preparation and gear, I noted that I had never been cold the entire time. A few pictures, including my photo of the week#4, are below.

Photo of the week #3: Middle Cove in the snow

On Friday, about 15-20 cm of wonderful fluffy powder fell in St. John's, and Saturday started with blue skies and sunshine at -15 °C (hard not to miss the mountains on a morning like that). So after breakfast, Norah and I took her little sled for a few loops around the house, and in the afternoon, we all went down to Middle Cove beach for a stroll along the coast in the snow. It is not very often that you see the beach with a fresh sheet of snow on a bright sunny day. That's why I picked the shot below as Photo of the week #3.

Middle Cove in the snow / im Schnee.

And because I had a hard time picking a single shot this week, here's the runner up: Virginia River / Und weil mir die Entscheidung für eine einzelne Aufnahme diese Woche schwer gefallen ist, hier noch ein Foto aus der engeren Auswahl: Virginia River.

Photo of the week #2: Prescott Street

Almost every day I come through the intersection of Queens Road and Prescott Street, and I often thought this corner would make for a good nighttime shot. So here it is, in black and white, as photo of the week #2. (Unrelated sidenote: we also had a blizzard this week, complete with 110 km/h winds, more than 50 cm of snow, and a 17 hour power outage, which was a bit like camping).

First sunlight of 2013 (Photo of the Week #1)

Yesterday morning at 7:49, I was on Signal Hill to welcome the first day of the year and to capture the first sunlight to reach North America in 2013.
I have decided that for the upcoming year, I will try to post a single Photo of the Week here on this site of a scene that feels appropriate or interesting. So below is the Photo of Week 1. Best wishes to all for 2013. Take good care of yourselves and those in your lives...
