Home sweet home (Austria)

As promised, here are a few words and photos on the second part of our trip to Europe - hard to believe we have been back for a month already... So after a week in Italy (see here) we took the train from Florence to Innsbruck, where Laura and I met in 2003, and where I had spent my early childhood and university years. We had dinner at a nice restaurant by the Inn river, strolled through the old city with a gelato, and visited some old friends, before taking the Arlberg railroad west to Vorarlberg. I hadn't been back to Vorarlberg in the summertime since my move to Canada six years ago, so we really treasured the warm sun, the lake, and the time with mum and Johannes. Below you find a few pictures and videos of our activities, and I have also added more photos to the trip slideshow (here)...

My brother Johannes and I engaged in the second edition of the backyard Olympics (orgininal happened in 2004). A classic event is the laundry rack jump...

I also enjoyed taking the mountainbike for a spin up to Eichenberg - amazing how I could remember every turn on the run down...

Norge

Norway has a special place in my heart. In 1995 me and 4 friends went on an almost 10,000 km road trip in a 1979 Volkwagen Bus to the North Cape, and in 2001 our last trip with my dad took us by car and ferry to Norway via Scotland, Shetland and the Faroe Islands. Memories of these memorable trips to this beautiful and openminded country have been on my mind in the last few days since hearing the terrible news of what happened there last week, and  and my thoughts are with the people of Norway. I was inspired by the words of the Norwegian premier, who said that "The Norwegian response to violence is more democracy, more openness and greater political participation". I think we can all learn from this...

Bella Italia

At the end of June, Laura and I spend a good couple of weeks in Europe, starting with a week in in Tuscany, followed by a day and a half in Innsbruck and  another week with my family in Austria. I have reserved a separate post for the Austrian part of the trip, so I will focus on Italy here. As a child I had spend almost every summer camping on Italian beaches with mum, dad, my brother and lots of cousins, and as a student in Innsbruck, I also took various trips south. So in a way, I am very attached and familiar with Italy, but at the same time I hadn't been to Tuscany in more than 20 years. It was wonderful to come back and rediscover this beautiful area again with Laura... We flew into Florence, rented a car and found our way to San Gimignano, where stayed at an agritourism place that rented aparments and produced wine and olive oil (Guardastelle, Italian for 'looking at the stars'). From there we took day trips to explore the area (Siena, Pisa, Volterra, Florence, Chianti region, etc. - map here) and simply enjoyed a wonderful time... Wild rides

After I couldn't go kayaking for close to a month due to a work trip to Ottawa, we went for a paddle from Tors Cove to La Manche yesterday (map). What would have been a nice paddle any day became a whole lot more exciting when we discovered a submerged shoal with breaking waves near Seal Cove. Ideal for surfing... I figured I give it a try, and caught a fantastic ride on the first try, so of course I had to try again. And again. Since were having so much fun, we took an early lunch, and then headed to another shoal we had spotted by Bauline East for some more play time. We did finally make to La Manche, but stopped so some more surfing on the way back. It was absolutely fantastic, and in spite of the sunny weather and a humpback sighting, the highlight and focus of the day were clearly the wild rides on the waves... I didn't take much time to stop for pictures, but thankfully, my fellow paddler Dean got a number of nice action shots of me which he kindly let me post here. Make sure to also check out Dean's blog with his perpective of the day and lots more great pictures...

Whales, eagles, waves, drizzle and fog...

On paper, today would certainly qualify as a lousy day for outdoor activities. But we didn't let the forecast rain and fog discourage us this morning, and set out to paddle 21 km from Bauline to Pouch Cove (map). And it was well worth it: after about 15 minutes, we saw the first of many bald eagles, and a little while later we encountered two fin whales not more than 50 m from our boats. After some play time in the waves off Cape St. Francis, we stopped for lunch and headed on into the fog towards Pouch Cove, where we arrived in the mid-afternoon, very pleased with our little adventure. Some video and photos are below.
