Vom Nordatlantik in die Wüste...

[English below] Frühmorgens noch auf einer Insel im Nordatlantik, einige Stunden später in Arizona in der Wüste... Irgendwie erscheint die Umgebung zunächst recht irreal wenn man so mit dem Flugzeug in eine völlig andere Welt verfrachtet wird. Umso stärker war jedoch der Eindruck heute nachmittag zwischen allerlei Kakteen und sonstigen stacheligen Pflanzen durch die Hügel ausserhalb von Phoenix/Scottdale zu stapfen - da ich prinzipiell auch auf Geschäftsreisen versuche ein bisschen etwas von der jeweiligen Umgebung kennenzulernen habe ich nämlich heute nachmittag ein Auto gemietet und bin hinaus in die Wüste gefahren... Was für eine faszinierende Landschaft die Sonora-Wüste mit den charakteristischen Saguarokakteen ist - das macht Lust auf mehr (Bilder hier) ... (Update 19. November: es ist immer noch sommerlich, und meine Konferenz ist sehr aufschlussreich und vermittelt eine interessante Perspektive über Dinge, von denen man sonst nur in der Zeitung liest. Morgen besichtigen wir eine Baumwollfarm, was auch interessant ist).
Amazing how plane travel can take you to a completely different place so quickly - North Atlantic to the Arizona desert in a matter of hours - certainly emphasizes the contrast... When I arrived in Phoenix around noon on Monday I took advantage of the afternoon off, rented a car and drove out into the Sonoran Desert. What an impressive landscape, and the vegetation is certainly different from anything I've ever seen (pictures here). As for the reason of my trip: my conference is going well so far and provides an interesting insight into international cooperation. Tomorrow we're going to visit a cotton farm, so I finally get to see how my clothes are grown...
